Police warning public to lock up valuables if headed out of town

Eau Claire (WQOW)- As you head off for the holiday weekend, the Eau Claire Police Department is asking you to leave something on at home.

Officers say this is the time of the year when burglars will try to take advantage of someone who is out of town. Police recommend telling your neighbors your travel plans.  They also say to make it look or sound like someone is home by leaving a light or radio on and be careful of what you share on social media sites.

"With the advent of smart phones and things, people telling everybody where they are going to be and that they are going to be gone, although that's a great thing for your friends and family, when other people and the public get to see that and they know where you are and where you live, if they know you are gone and it makes your house more of a target," explains Officer Kyle Roder with the Eau Claire Police Department.

Here's another tip from police: keep valuables inside your car; like shopping bags or GPS devices, hidden and out of sight.
