Eau Claire (WQOW) - The cost of care is going up at several area hospitals.

Mayo Clinic Health System is raising rates at its hospitals in Eau Claire, Menomonie, Osseo, Bloomer and Barron. The nearly 5 percent increase will take effect January 1st.

Mayo says inadequate reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid is a big reason for the rate hike. It says if reimbursement rates were what they were in the 1980s the hospitals could reduce charges by 45 percent.
