Trees for Troops volunteers stop in Madison on Tuesday

MADISON (WKOW) -- Volunteers began collecting Christmas trees in Madison to send to our troops on Tuesday.

This is the eighth year tree growers have been able to donate them to our soldiers through the "Trees for Troops" campaign. The program is sponsored by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and Fed Ex Corp.

Organizers say it's a great way to spread Christmas cheer to those who may not be able to spend the holidays with their families.

"It's a nice thing to give some trees away to some families that have a family members overseas," Wade Comstock, a donor for Trees for Troops, said. "A lot easier for them to get a tree to celebrate Christmas."

Volunteers collected, prepared and loaded almost 200 donated on Tuesday in Madison. All are to be delivered to U.S. Military bases.

Nationally, 17,000 trees are expected to be delivered to U.S. Military bases this year, as well as an international shipment to bases overseas.

This total will put the program at more than 120,000 trees delivered since it started in 2005.
