MADISON (WKOW) -- University police arrest a man for stealing bicycles on campus.
Officers arrested Ryan J. Loughrin, of Madison, in connection with bicycle thefts from campus. Loughrin admitted to investigators that he stole bikes from campus, focusing mainly on those that were secured with cable locks. Loughrin then sold the bicycles on Craigslist.
Loughrin was booked into the Dane County Jail for theft. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be forthcoming.
The UW–Madison Police Department wants to remind the community to use proper crime prevention techniques when securing valuables. According to Sgt. Aaron Chapin, "If you have a bicycle, make sure you lock it using a quality ‘U-Lock' style lock. Place the lock on the bicycle securing the front wheel and the frame of the bicycle to an approved bike rack."
Thieves frequently use Craigslist and other internet sites to sell their stolen items. If you choose to purchase an item from Craigslist, make sure to obtain the serial number from the seller along with a contract from the seller to help protect you from fraud.
