Factory owner says he was unaware of need for fire exits

BANGLADESH (WKOW) -- A fire in Bangladesh that killed 112 people is still being investigated. On Thursday, the owner of the burned out clothing factory said, the situation is his fault.

However, owner Delwar Hossain also said, noone ever told him he should install emergency exits to the outside. He told The Daily Star newspaper "It was my fault. But nobody told me that there was no emergency exit, which could be made accessible from outside. Nobody even advised me to install one like that, apart from the existing ones."

Fire officials say lives would have been saved if the building had the exits. The factory was making clothes for Wal-Mart, Sears, Disney and other global retailers. Three managers at the factory in Dhaka, the capital, were detained by Bangladesh authorities Wednesday on suspicion that they had blocked doors before the fire, preventing many workers from escaping.
