UW men's basketball: Defense lifts Badgers over Cal

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin used first-half runs of 14-0 and 12-0 to take control early and then put together an 11-0 run in the second half to ice an 81-56 win over previously unbeaten California on Sunday.

Four Wisconsin players scored in double digits with Ben Brust leading the Badgers (5-3) with a season-high 22 points. Jared Berggren had 18 points, Ryan Evans finished with 13, and Sam Dekker added 10 points to round out the double-figure scoring.

Following an early 6-5 Cal advantage, a Frank Kaminsky basket with 14:47 remaining in the first half started what became a 14-0 run for the Badgers.

The UW lead swelled to 31-12 with just over five minutes remaining in the half following 12-straight points from the Badgers. UW headed into the half holding a 37-24 advantage, and causing 12 Cal turnovers.

The lead would not subside in the last 20 minutes of action. The Badgers opened the final half with an 11-0 advantage and the Bears would not come within 17 points as UW held Cal to just eight field goals in the second stanza.

Wisconsin equaled a Kohl Center record with 16 steals and capitalized on 23 Cal turnovers, owning a 25-10 advantage on points off turnovers. The Badgers also reclaimed the glass with a 36-30 margin, including 14 offensive boards.

Allen Crabbe had a game-high 25 for the Bears (6-1), who tallied a season-low 56 points.

The Badgers return to the Kohl Center on Tues., Dec. 4, as they welcome the Nebraska-Omaha Mavs for a 7 p.m. (CT) tip-off on ESPN3.com.
