MADISON (WKOW) -- A mother, who is accused of neglecting to supervise her 2-year-old daughter before the girl inhaled a lethal dose of gasoline, was given a signature bond during a court appearance Monday.
35-year-old Connie Hartmann is charged with felony child neglect resulting in death, and felony child neglect resulting in bodily harm.
Authorities say Hartmann was sleeping during daylight hours in May when her 2-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son slipped out of the family's apartment in the Town of Medina, went into a neighbor's car, and were overcome by by fumes from a gas can inside the car
The boy survived, and authorities say he was placed in foster care.
The criminal complaint states Hartmann was aware her son had previously slipped away and played with a gas can.
Authorities say Hartmann was arrested last week in connection with a domestic incident. She appeared in court with a bruise beneath one of her eyes, and wearing a suicide prevention jail smock.
