MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for shooting and killing his friend back in February.

Edgar Ivan Salinas-Leal was in Dane County Court Friday to receive the prison sentence, along with 15 years of extended supervision. He was arrested in February 2012 and accused of shooting and killing 38-year-old Darrell Ballweg while he was staying at Ballweg's house.

Family members of Salinas-Leal and Ballweg talked and presented during the sentencing hearing.

According to a criminal complaint, Salinas-Leal's wife, Jessica asked Ballweg for food and he refused to share. Police say, that's when Salinas-Leal challenged him to a fight and shot him in the chest.

Salinas-Leal pleaded guilty to shooting and killing Ballweg. The 25-year-old accepted a plea deal that reduced a first-degree intentional homicide charge to second-degree intentional homicide.
