Student leaves school after graduation threat

Posted:

SUN PRAIRIE (WKOW) -- A student at Sun Prairie High School has left the school after administrators say the student made a threat involving a shooting at graduation.

27 News has learned the student who made the threat is a 17-year old boy.

In emails and phone calls to Sun Prairie high school families this week, principal Lisa Heipp said police and school officials investigated the student's actions.

"There was an incident that occurred at the high school in which a senior student made a disturbing comment about graduation.  In this comment, the student referenced a graduation shooting," Heipp said. "During the investigation, the student was closely monitored by high school staff.  And, as a result of this situation, the student will no longer be attending Sun Prairie High School. "

Sun Prairie schools administrator Tim Culver says the student has not been expelled, but placed in an alternative, learning setting.

Culver tells 27 News there was no, so-called "hit list" of students found. School officials also say the student did not fully comprehend the gravity of his remark.

Culver says a fellow student first heard the threat about next June's graduation, and the existence of the remark spread through the student body, with school officials ultimately becoming aware of it. Culver says the threat was made shortly before all seniors convened for an organizational meeting on graduation.

Sun Prairie police lieutenant Brian Teasdale tells 27 News the incident remains under criminal investigation.
