St. Croix County (WQOW) - A lawsuit has been settled against St. Croix County. A woman sued claiming a deputy sexually assaulted her. That deputy later committed suicide.
Jackie Peterson was an inmate in the county jail four years ago. She said Deputy Darren Hyland forced her into a closet and sexually assaulted her three times on the same day.
Hyland shot and killed himself when officials started investigating. Peterson sued St. Croix County claiming her civil rights were violated and that the county failed to supervise jail staff.
She was seeking $300,000 but has now agreed to settle for $70,000. The county will pay that amount along with $110,000 in legal fees.
