Badgers coaching search discussed on Capitol City Sunday

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The search for a new Wisconsin Badgers head football coach and the search for bipartisanship at the Capitol are the featured topics on this weekend's edition of Capitol City Sunday.

The chair of the UW Athletic Board says he wants to make sure any new football coach will help the school win off the field as well as on.

As Bret Bielema compiled a healthy winning percentage in his seven years as head football coach, his players also compiled an impressive 3.0 grade-point average.

UW Athletic Chair Dale Bjorling wants that to continue.

"I chaired the Academics compliance subcommittee for the Athletic Board for several years and I can tell you that I spent a lot of time looking at grades, looking at coursework, looking at progress towards graduation," said Bjorling.

Bjorling is also committed to interviewing minority candidates for the job.

"I think there has been concern in the past, particularly on the Black Coaches Association, that there wasn't adequate diversity in the searches and I think there's a strong commitment on the part of the Athletic Department to include a diverse pool of candidates," said Bjorling.

In the second half of the show, new Senate Minority Leader Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee) takes aim at Republicans over what he says is an extreme agenda on issues, such as eliminating same-day voter registration and revamping the Government Accountability Board.

He criticizes Governor Scott Walker (R-Wisconsin) for not doing enough to quiet legislative Republicans.

"What he's saying is, 'please stop talking about these extreme ideas, because I'm trying to pretend to be a moderate out there,'" said Sen. Larson.  "He's not saying he'd veto these bills, he's not saying he's against these bills. What he's saying is 'I'd really like it if you stopped talking about these bills.'"

Capitol City Sunday airs at 9:00 a.m., right after This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
