Authorities: Woman made false claim about hit & run

LANCASTER (WKOW) -- The Grant County Sheriff's Department says a woman who reported a hit and run injury earlier this week made up the story.

Authorities say 47-year-old Cheryl Walton of rural Lancaster told them that she was driving into town to get some coffee on Wednesday when she found 19-year-old Jacob Colson of Lancaster lying in the road with injuries.

Sheriff Nate Dreckman says officers determined Walton's claim was false. He says the investigation revealed that multiple people were at a party in rural Lancaster. Several people left the party, including Colson, and were traveling on University Farm Road when the vehicle Colson was riding in stopped to meet another vehicle so Colson could get a ride back to Lancaster.

When Colson jumped out of the car and was about to get into the other car, the second car backed up and ran over him.

The sheriff says the occupants of the vehicle went to their home and woke Walton. Dreckman says the investigation shows Walton instructed them, including the driver Daniel Udelhoven, 20, of rural Potosi, to hide and she would take care of it. Dreckman says that's when Walton drove to the scene and told others there to leave. He says she then called 911 to file the false report.

Authorities say Colson was severely injured as a result of the incident and has had multiple surgeries.

Sheriff Dreckman says charges will be referred later next week.
