Busy first day for plow drivers

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Sunday was a busy day for Madison snow plow drivers, salting streets and plowing the slush.

"The anticipation has been killing us," says plow driver Thomas Sarbacker.

"We'll go down Park Street and you'll take a right on Nolan Avenue," Sarbacker says as he looks over his route.

The goal is to spread enough salt to prevent the slush from freezing.

Drivers will also go up and down streets throwing pile after pile of soggy snow.

"Family knows that they won't be seeing me for a while. Usually get up and go to work, go home, eat and sleep," Sarbacker says.

It's a stressful shift for many, but after 13 years it's pretty much his routine.

Like most plow drivers, Sarbacker knows extra snow means a little extra in his paycheck. That's the perfect present for a plow driver.

On days without snow his duties are vary, but when the snow comes he's excited to hit the streets.

"See some of the interesting things people do in the middle of a snowstorm," Sarbacker laughs.

The city of Madison sent out 26 crews to clean streets on Sunday.

Thanks to the salt brine they laid earlier in the weekend, they say it went smoothly.
