MADISON (WKOW) -- The Dane County Sheriff's Office is offering winter driving tips to help keep the roads safe.
Officials say the weekend weather may have provided the first refresher course in winter driving. Several crashes and slide offs were reported due to slippery conditions overnight into Monday morning.
The Sheriff's Office wants to encourage motorists to drive with caution. Officials say even experienced drivers need an adjustment period when the snow and ice hit the roads.
Authorities say drivers should have their vehicle properly maintained and that windshields should be clear of snow and ice. They say headlights should be on when driving, even during the day.
Officials say drivers should avoid using cruise control in wintery conditions and should be extra cautious on bridges and overpasses because icy patches are more common.
To be informed, officials say to stay tuned to the latest weather reports on the radio. They also say to make sure someone knows your travel routes and itinerary so that, if you don't arrive on time, someone will know where to find you.
The Sheriff's Office says it's a good idea to keep a cell phone and charger with you when you travel. Officials say it's also a good idea to keep a winter survival kit in your trunk.
If your car should become disabled, officials say to stay in the vehicle, run your engine and heater for short intervals, and to open your window slightly to avoid carbon monoxide build-up. They say that if a storm becomes too much for you to handle, seek refuge immediately.
Above all, officials say to take your time, wear your seatbelt and drive sober.
