First Offender's program to be recommended in case of attack on Montee Ball

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Dane County court official tells 27 News three UW-Madison students charged with felony crimes in this summer's attack on Badger football star Montee Ball are expected to enter pleas Monday, with a recommendation to the court the students enter a first offender's program.

Judicial staff assistant Paula McCullough says the cases of Wendell Venerable, Robert Wilks and Deonte Wilson are all slated to be scheduled for resolving, plea hearings and sentencings Monday, although electronic court records still list the cases of Wilks and Wilson as scheduled for trial.

It is possible a felony charge of substantial battery could remain pending for all three men, until successful completion of the offender's program, if a judge places them in it.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne has yet to respond to requests for comment from 27 News.

Madison police officials say Ball was attacked by four people Aug. 1 as he walked home on University Avenue around bar time. Police spokesperson Joel DeSpain says in addition to the three men facing charges, a fourth suspect has been identified, but there has been no arrest.

Ball suffered a concussion and other injuries and missed practice time prior to the start of the Badgers' season.

Authorities say part of the motivation for the attack was retaliation for a fight at a July party involving Badger players.
