WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Federal judges are trying to force Congress to pay what could amount to millions in once-promised increases in judges' salaries.
A federal appeals court has ordered lawmakers to pay several federal judges years of back pay. Now another group of federal judges wants Congress to pay all the judges years of missed cost-of-living increases.
In 1989 Congress agreed to provide judges cost-of-living increases. But judges didn't get their money in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2007 and 2010. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit now says the money should be paid, and judges want a class-action lawsuit to cover about 1,000 eligible judges.
The cost could be in the millions. District judges make at least $174,000 but would make at least $247,000 with the missing cost-of-living increases
