MADISON (WKOW) -- The debate over gun control is sure to be renewed after Friday morning's mass shooting that left 20 children dead at an elementary school in Connecticut.
Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) has been a staunch advocate for Second Amendment rights, but he knows the debate over certain gun restrictions will soon be ramped up.
Sen. Johnson was at a loss for words when asked about the tragedy Friday afternoon.
"Its awful. It is beyond comprehension, these types of tragedies, words are utterly inadequate," said Sen. Johnson.
One gun control issue that is expected to arise again is a ban on assault weapons, such as the .223 caliber Bushmaster rifle the shooter reportedly used Friday morning.
A federal ban on assault weapons was implemented in 1994, but Congress let it expire ten years later.
Calls for gun dealers to stop selling clips holding up to one hundred rounds of ammunition will also be renewed.
"And you know, hopefully, once we move beyond the tragedy and hopefully well beyond it, maybe we can start taking a look at these things, but uh, this is not the time to be talking about specific policy prescriptions," said Sen. Johnson. "I know, its a tragedy that at these moments and times you start talking about the politics of some of these issues, and so, I don't want to do it here today."
In the past, Sen. Johnson has voiced strong opposition to such restrictions, but many gun-control advocates around the nation are already calling for such action.
