Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire apartment building has been without an elevator for nearly a week, making things difficult for some elderly residents on the top floors. And it could be weeks before it's fixed.
Commonweal Development says an Xcel Energy power failure burned out circuit boards to their elevators at the River Plaza Apartments. Many residents of the five-story building are elderly, and some need wheelchairs or walkers to get around. Commonweal says they have someone at the building four hours a day to help residents until the elevator is fixed. They also have staff on call in case of an emergency. The company says it shares its resident's frustrations, but says replacement parts may not be available for up to three weeks.
Xcel Energy says: "On Dec. 5, an outage occurred affecting some customers in downtown Eau Claire for about 1½ hours. At times power outages can cause spikes, surges or low voltage situations which can damage customer-owned equipment. That is why Xcel Energy encourages customers with sensitive equipment to install protection devices to avoid potential damage."
