New Richmond (WQOW) - In two days residents of a western Wisconsin community can start keeping chickens.
A new ordinance allowing chickens in New Richmond takes effect on Thursday. It was approved by the city council last week.
Residents will be allowed to have three to five chickens, depending on the size of their yard. But first they have to get approval from 75 percent of their adjoining neighbors. They must also pay a one-time $75 fee and a $15 annual fee.
The city says the ordinance was designed to allow residents to have eggs for their own use but they are prohibited from selling them.
