MADISON (WKOW) -- Severe winter weather is expected in the Madison area, with up to 15 inches of snow expected starting late Wednesday and continuing through most of Thursday.
Heavy snow can damage roofs, leading to water damage and even collapse in extreme cases.
The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety offers the following tips for safely removing snow from your roof:
*Snow removal equipment you use on pavement should never be used on your roof, as it could damage the roof cover.
*Try to use a rake with a long extension arm that allows you to remove the snow while standing on the ground.
*Don't use a roof rake while on a ladder.
*If you are uncomfortable doing the work yourself, hire a licensed and bonded snow removal contractor. Be sure to check references and to ask to see the contractor's certificates of insurance.
