Weekly unemployment claims rise

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits rose last week by 17,000, reversing four weeks of declines.

According to the Labor Department, about 361,000 people sought unemployment aid last week. This was a revised 344,000 from the week before.

Experts suggest the job market continues to grow modestly based on a four-week moving average, which fell 13,750 to 367,750. This is the lowest since late October.

The economy has generated an average of 151,000 jobs a month in 2012, not enough to pull high unemployment down sharply.
