Increased police presence at local high school Friday

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Rumors of potential violence lead to increased police presence at a local high school Friday.

The rumors of a potential school shooting or mass suicide swept through Memorial High School this week. The violence was rumored to be happening Friday, which according to the Mayan calendar was predicted to be the end of the world.   But Eau Claire police say they spent countless hours investigating and could not find any credible threat.

They say the same rumor has been heard at other schools in Wisconsin and around the nation, apparently spread by Facebook and other social media.

Police say the increased number of officers at Memorial High School Friday was aimed at fostering a safe environment and was not a response to the rumored violence.
