Local church serves up Christmas meal to hundreds

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Christmas tradition continued in downtown Madison as hundreds of people attended the annual community meal at the First United Methodist Church on Wisconsin Avenue.

The dining room opened at noon to serve up ham, vegetables and much more to the homeless and anyone else who wanted to join in.

"There's lots of single people that live around here and they don't have a place to go," Paul Devine said after enjoying the meal. For volunteer John Stoltzenber, spending time at the church is a holiday tradition. "It's a way of saying we care. And it's a way of sharing and looking beyond yourself and your immediate family," he said.

This is the 30th year for the Christmas meal. They do the same thing on Thanksgiving and Easter. Tuesday, volunteers also delivered more that 200 meals to area homes.
