TOWN OF DANE (WKOW) -- A New Year's Day snowmobile crash that left the rider hurt is a reminder for snowmobilers to be careful this time of year.
Authorities say on Tuesday afternoon, a snowmobiler unexpectedly drove onto Lavina Road in the town of Dane. A driver in an approaching vehicle was unable to stop in time because the road was snow-covered and slippery.
The snowmobile and car collided and the rider was hurt. He was taken to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Dane County Sheriff's officials are reminding snowmobilers to be safe when out on trails. Alcohol and speed are often factors in snowmobile crashes, so riders should drive sober and at moderate speeds. At night, riders are required by law to not exceed 55 mph.
Officials also suggest riders stay on marked trails, avoid bodies of water, dress appropriately for the weather, and bring along a first aid kit, including a flashlight and compass.
