Baldwin blazing new territory in U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- The country's 113th Congress is now in place.

Wisconsin's newest U.S. Senator is blazing new territory.

Democrat Tammy Baldwin took the oath of office Thursday.

She's the first openly gay member in U.S. Senate history.

During an interview with our Milwaukee affiliate, WISN, Baldwin commented on its significance.

"One of the ways I have of putting it is, if you're not in the room the conversation is about you. Even if you have extraordinary number of allies in the room, they're talking about you. If you're in the room the conversation is with you, and that's transformative."

Baldwin is also the first female senator from Wisconsin.

She said she hopes she can be an inspiration to young girls with political aspirations.
