SAUK COUNTY (WKOW) -- The Sauk County dairy farmer who sold raw milk will be in court for a hearing Friday.
Vernon Hershberger faces four misdemeanor criminal counts. He would get up to 2 1/2 years in prison and be fined more than $13,000 if he's found guilty of not getting the proper licenses to run his business. Hershberger argues that no license exists in Wisconsin to allow him to sell raw milk.
Hershberger's supporters say pasteurization, which kills harmful bacteria and extends milk's shelf life, depletes the milk of beneficial nutrients and enzymes. Opponents say the threat of food-borne illnesses like E.Coli or salmonella should take precedent.
