Ice regatta on Lake Kegonsa

MADISON (WKOW) -- More than 60 boaters from across the U.S. kicked off the Western Regional Regatta Saturday, on Lake Kegonsa.

Organizers were a bit disappointed with the fairly mild wind conditions, but it was windy enough to get their races in.

"Boats are here from all over the United States, even though it's the Western regional," said Julie Jankowski, Western Regional Rear Admiral.  "We have boats here from the East Coast, Toledo, Michigan, Minnesota. So it's a great gathering."

Organizers say the ice boats can generate speeds up to three times faster than wind conditions. The average boat speed during today's regatta was around 45 miles per hour.

The Regatta continues on Sunday, again on Lake Kegonsa.
