Madison implements open data policy

MADISON (WKOW) -- Mayor Paul Soglin announced the implementation of the city's open data policy on Tuesday.

The open data concept makes information created and used by government employees, like license applications or building permits, available to the public.

It's meant to be a tool for Madison's tech community to provide that data which can then be used to create applications for smartphones, tablets or the web.

"It provides opportunity for people who think and who create to look at this resource and to figure out how they can make the lives of Madisonians better," said Soglin during Tuesday's presentation.

Madison is the first city in the state and only the second in the nation to pass an open data ordinance.
