Lawmakers want to prevent all-night debates - WQOW TV: Eau Claire, WI NEWS18 News, Weather, and Sports

MADISON (WKOW) -- State lawmakers want to avoid the late night debates that have become common over the past couple of years.

Republican and Democratic Assembly leaders met privately Tuesday to discuss proposals for a debate curfew.

Both sides say they're far apart, but they have the same goals.

"The goal is, I think we're in agreement, that we don't want to be there days on end," said Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Burlington), addressing media members with Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha). "We want to have a meaningful, productive debate, but do it in a way that engages the public. It lets them see exactly what's going to be done inside the process."

The two sides will meet again Wednesday.

Vos says he intends to have the Assembly vote on the rule changes Thursday.
