DNR conducting aerial deer population surveys

MADISON (WKOW) -- Biologists for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are conducting aerial deer counts in parts of the chronic wasting disease management zone.

Helicopter surveys are already underway in a 260 mile radius of western Dane County, eastern Iowa County and in the Baraboo area around Devil's Lake State Park. 

There will also be airplane surveys of another 3,500 linear miles of the CWD zone.

DNR biologists anticipate the helicopter surveys will be completed by mid-February, but that is somewhat dependent on how much snow remains on the ground. 

Snow cover of logs, rocks and stumps is important to make the deer are clearly visible on the landscape.
