Citizen tip leads to DNR wastewater investigation

Barron County (WQOW) - The DNR has put a frac sand company on notice.

In November, a citizen notified the state agency about muddy-looking water in a marsh near New Auburn.  The DNR believed the problem was being caused by wastewater from the nearby Great Northern Sand plant in the town of Dovre.

The DNR said Great Northern Sand employees realized this and began pumping the water out of the pond.  The state agency has since sent the company a notice of noncompliance for discharging wastewater, which Great Northern Sand wasn't allowed to do under its existing permit.  The DNR said it did not issue a citation this time because it appears the muddy water did not go past the marsh area and also because employees at the wet plant responded to address the problem.

The DNR said it spoke with the company's consultant on Thursday.  They discussed long-term options.  Under one option, the company could reapply for a permit that allows wastewater to be discharged.  If Great Northern Sand did that, it would have to meet certain criteria, including water sampling and inspections.
