MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- An 18-year-old has been sentenced to 30 years in jail for a New Year's Day crash that killed a New Berlin couple last year.
At the time of the accident, Kelly Duke was 17 years old. Police say he sped into an intersection with a stolen car and slammed into another vehicle. Tests show Duke had a blood-alcohol level of 0.183 at the time. Edwin and Jean Thaves, who were inside the other car, were killed.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the victims' family sought the maximum sentence of 45 years. Duke's attorney says he has no memory of the crash and suggested a sentence of 15 years.
