BERLIN (WKOW) – The Berlin Area School District's lawsuit over its high school mascot is on hold after a recent ruling involving a similar case in Mukwonago.
In both Berlin and Mukwonago, resident's complaints to the state Department of Public Instruction resulted in orders to change their athletic team Indian nickname.
Parents in Mukwonago sued to overturn the decision and won in circuit court. In response, some Berlin residents hired the same lawyers and filed a similar suit.
However, the state appeals court overturned the circuit court and ruled the parents didn't have standing. DPI officials said the district now has until 2014 to drop the nickname.
According to WLUK-TV, Berlin will wait to see if the Wisconsin Supreme Court will hear an appeal in the Mukwonago case.
