PRESS RELEASE --- From Eau Claire Fire Dept.
At 2:08 a.m. the Eau Claire Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a
structure fire in a duplex at 2406 3rd St. on Eau Claire's west side. Initial
dispatch stated a fire in the attic with occupants leaving their apartments.
Eau Claire Fire arrived to find light smoke in the second floor apartment with
heat build-up in the ceiling area.
All occupants were out of their apartment when we arrived.
Engine 2 officer quickly assessed the situation and called for a 1 ¾ line to
the second floor. With use of the thermal imaging camera Engine 2's crew was
able to locate a hot area in the ceiling. With access gained they extinguished
the fire in that area of the attic. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to
a small area of the attic with no extension.
After initial fire attack crews were kept busy checking for
hot spots, removing debris, ventilating, protecting personal property and
checking for elevated levels of CO.
Damage to the apartment is estimated at $25,000 with most of
the damage in the second floor apartment. Red Cross was on-site assisting
occupants with temporary shelter and food.
There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.
