MADISON (WKOW) -- A Wisconsin Marine is awarded one of the highest combat honors on Sunday.
At a small ceremony in Madison Sunday morning, Lance Cpl. Nicholas O'Brien was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his heroism while serving in Afghanistan.
In March 2010, O'Brien's company was ambushed and several were wounded. He took charge and was able to successfully coordinate evacuation while under fire. But O'Brien says he's just like the rest of the Marines.
"I just want to accept it humbly," says O'Brien. "So many people do so much for this country, especially those who serve and you know a lot of them don't get recognized, I'd like to recognize them as well."
The Appleton native has served in the Marines for five years.
