CAMBRIA (WKOW) -- Family and friends are raising money for a 2-year-old girl who was diagnosed with a form of leukemia a few months ago.
The "Get 'Mad'dy at Cancer" benefit kicked off at noon on Saturday at the Cambria Fire Department, and continued at Willy's Bar in Portage.
An event organizer says the family is seeing a lot of support.
"I think they've overwhelmed... they're a very strong family so if anyone can handle it, they can," says Maria Peterson.
Peterson says Maddy's father has seen this kind of cancer before. 20 years ago, his sister lost her battle at just 10 years old.
CAMBRIA (WKOW) -- Although childhood leukemia is a rare disease, it accounts for about one out of three cancers in children. And for a Cambria family, the disease effects their lives everyday.
On October 12 of last year, two-year-old Madeline "Maddy" Schepp was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia and is now undergoing a two-year treatment plan.
According to the Mayo Clinic, acute lymphoid leukemia is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. Acute lymphocytic leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children, and according to the Mayo Clinic, treatments result in a good chance for a cure.
In order to give Maddy the best chance as success against this terrible disease, a benefit will be held on Saturday. Everything donated will go to ensure Maddy makes every appointment and gets every resource available to win her battle.
The benefit, called Get "Mad"dy at Cancer, will be held from noon to 6 p.m. at the Cambria Fire department. It will then continue at Big Willy's Bar in Portage from 6 p.m. to close.
If you would like to donate you can do so online or by mail to: 118 E Conant Street #3, Portage, WI 53901. You can make checks payable to "Get Maddy at Cancer".
