Bird's Eye-Sore: City wants property owner to remove pigeon loft

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An illegal pigeon loft is at the heart of a rezoning request going before the Eau Claire City Council next week.

The council will consider whether to rezone two properties, at 1717 Keith Street and 2010 Brackett Avenue.  Many years ago, the properties were zoned commercial to allow for a hair salon to be added, but the project never happened so the request is to rezone as residential.

The city says in recent years, the owner built an illegal pigeon loft on one site.  Inspectors have seen anywhere from 100 to 150 pigeons between the properties and neighbors have complained about the waste.  The Eau Claire Plan Commission recently postponed the rezoning request until the owner removed the loft.  The city council may elect to do the same.  The property was inspected two weeks ago and at that time, the loft had not been removed.  The health department told the owner if he didn't comply with city code, the property could be declared a public nuisance.
