Gold coin, diamond ring found in Salvation Army red kettle

LA CROSSE (WKOW) -- The La Crosse Salvation Army is in the middle of its red kettle campaign and ended up finding a few interesting things inside some of those kettles.

One of the items they found was a gold coin. Officials need to have it appraised for a value.

They also found a diamond ring, valued at about $325, which came with a note attached stating the donation was in honor of the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut shootings.

With that donation, the agency says it passed its campaign goal of $650,000, now at $665,000.

"You see so many people that really need something, roof over their head, meal on the table... You've seen that the homeless people are in this community. We do have the resources to help people. We can get them on their feet again so that's just a big meaningful part of what we will be able to do with all this," says Julie Nelson, the Salvation Army's development director.

This is the first time in at least four years the La Crosse Salvation Army has been able to meet its goal.
