Community event focuses on poverty in Chippewa Valley

Eau Claire (WQOW) - When you think of the word poverty your mind may wander overseas. Saturday, a local community event put the focus on poverty right here in the Chippewa Valley.
The local organization "JONAH" or Joining Our Neighbors, Advancing Hope, hosted the event called "The Poverty Trap". There was a quiz for people to take on local poverty numbers and attendees were given the challenge of working with a restricted budget.

"They have to work together, within a given budget, with given expenses, and with a different calamity, whatever that might work out how they would manage if they were indeed in a situation where they were dealing with poverty. We need to look out of our comfortable lives and see how our neighbors are struggling, and come to a little better understanding of that. We are hoping to give people a little bit of an understanding of what it would be like," said JONAH member Betty Hurst.

According to a study done by the UW Extension office, a little over 14%  of the residents in Eau Claire County are considered poor. That's based on a family of 4 who earns less than $23,000.
