Private inauguration ceremony today in Washington

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- A private inauguration ceremony for President Barack Obama was held Sunday in Washington, in the blue room of the White House.

The public ceremony at the U.S. Capitol is slated for Monday morning. President Obama is the nation's 44th president. The last inauguration saw 1.8 million people brave the freezing temperatures and large crowds. This year, the crowds are not expected to be as big.

In 2009, the total cost of the inauguration was $170 million. While incumbent presidents historically spend less money on a second inauguration, it's not clear what the total bill will be at this time.

Analysis of some of the known appropriations so far puts the total at $13.637 million, but it will no doubt be a much larger price tag when everything is accounted for.

U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office.
