TOWN OF BELOIT (WKOW)-- A Rockford Illinois man is in custody after three people were hit by gunfire early Sunday morning.
Town of Beloit police say it happened just before 2:00 AM outside of the Silver Slippers Saloon as a group of people left the bar. Officers heard gun shots coming from that area. They observed 20-30 unidentified people scattering on foot and rushing for their vehicles in the parking lot.
Two subjects were shot in the leg. Neither injury is considered life threatening, but one victim did have to undergo surgery. Both were taken to the Beloit Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. A third victim was grazed by a bullet. They received minor treatment by EMT's for a small head wound. The injury has been reported as superficial.
Police tracked down the shooters car a short distance away. The alleged shooter is being held at the Winnebago County Jail awaiting extradition proceedings. Authorities identified the shooter as Antwann Griffin, 25-year-old of Rockford Illinois. Two other occupants in the car were also arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct.
Police say the incident began with verbal threats, angry looks and hostile gestures that were exchanged inside the bar. When people walked outside the incident escalated to violence.
