Man accidentally shot at Wood Co. rifle range in critical condition

(WAOW) - Authorities say 25-year-old Joseph Sammartino of Wisconsin Rapids is in critical condition after he was accidentally shot at a rifle range in Wood County.

According to Wood County Sheriff's Department officials, the shooting happened just after 3 p.m. at the Wood County Rifle Range.

Authorities say Joseph's father, 53-year-old Stephen Sammartino, was clearing his weapon when it accidentally discharged, hitting his son in the back.

Joseph Sammartino was airlifted to Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital.

Wood Co. officials say they are treating this as an accident, but will continue to investigate.
