Eau Claire (WQOW) - A high school classroom will get a better picture of journalism because of a grant.
On Tuesday, RCU presented a $300 Tools for Schools award to Mr. Niemuth's class at Eau Claire Memorial. He teaches high school journalism and will use the money to pay for a digital camcorder. "The attention spans are shorter. We have to figure out ways to get their attention, to meet their needs. We try to promote ourselves as 'Purple Wings: News You Can Use,' so we provide information not only based on community issues, but here at school," said Journalism Instructor Greg Niemuth. "A huge part of journalism right now is the shift from print to all the online stuff, and video stuff, and convergence journalism... so with trying to stay current, I think it's really important to have a video camera," said Eau Claire Memorial Senior Mack Chambers.
Students have their own news website at Memorial. It's called Purple Wings and can be found by clicking here.
Tools for Schools is a partnership between RCU and WQOW News 18. We are taking nominations for next month's $300 award. If you'd like to apply, click on Tools for Schools under the Home category on this website.
