DODGE COUNTY (WKOW) -- A sexual assault trial in Dodge County is moving forward after a rarely-used process of finding jury members.
15 people who were summoned to jury duty Tuesday said they had the flu. So the court called in Sheriff Todd Nehls, who was legally obligated to find new jurors. He was asked to round up new volunteers off the street.
"I probably cold have gone to the local restaurant and said, 'Hey, I need somebody to sit on the jury for three days for our high trial.' I probably would have had some volunteers. But, why go through that if you didn't have to," said Nehls.
Nehls turned to a 30-member group of volunteers who help non-profits and law enforcement, but everyone who stepped up was not picked.
Eventually enough other volunteers came in to fill the jury.
The Dodge County Clerk of Courts says this kind of jury assembly has happened multiple times in the past decade, but it's never led to a trial being rescheduled.
The trial is for David Ennenga, who is charged with second degree sexual assault.
