Northern Wis. deer cleared of CWD

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The DNR says it's definitely good news. All chronic wasting disease (CWD) test results are in for over 1,000 deer killed in northwestern Wisconsin and not one case of CWD has been found.

Deer killed by hunters and cars in four northwestern Wisconsin counties were tested this fall and winter after a confirmed case of the disease was found last spring in Washburn County.

CWD is a fatal brain sickness that could threaten the state's deer population.

The DNR says the results strongly suggest that CWD is not widespread in that area.

A decision is expected this spring on how extensive the testing efforts should be this year. A ban on baiting or feeding deer in those four counties will remain in place.
