Wisconsin lawmakers tour proposed mining area

IRON COUNTY (WKOW) -- A group of state lawmakers got a first hand look at the area proposed for an iron ore mine in northwestern Wisconsin.

Twelve lawmakers, 6 Republicans and 6 Democrats, got a tour of the area in Iron County on Friday.

The organizer of the tour, Rep. Mary Czaja, (R) Irma, says the GOP's plan to fast-track the mine is just the beginning to help the local economy.

Others see a different opportunity sitting in the hills.

"It guarantees the process to start and I think that's what we really need to get going so that the people of this area have a sense that they're will be this employments and have prosperity. I believe we have a mine right here, let's figure out a way to get this high grade ore to market rather than stripmine one of the most beautiful places in Wisconsin," said Czaja.

State Democrats are calling for another public hearing on the mining bill.

About 100 people were not able to testify Wednesday during a 12-hour hearing at the state capitol.
