Broken water line in Eau Claire blocks part of Graham Ave.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A broken water line in downtown Eau Claire leaves behind a huge mess.

The Eau Claire Fire Department says the break will leave the 400 block of Graham Avenue blocked overnight, and into Sunday, while city workers repair the damage. The pressure of the water caused the sidewalk to buckle up about a foot.   It's uncertain what caused the pipe to break, but officials say there could be a couple factors.

Battalion Chief Bryon Benson, says, "I got an update from the utilities section of the city, and they think that the main to that building was put in 1939. The recent cold snap could have something to do with it, because it makes the ground heave and move, and it finally maybe thawed out enough that it actually let loose."

Because it was so close, water leaked into the basement of the neighboring building, leaving behind at least a foot of  water to pump out. The basement is home to a martial arts studio.
