Eau Claire (WQOW) -- After both the UW-Eau Claire men's and women's basketball teams fall at home to UW-Whitewater, both Blugolds squads look for strong finishes.
For 36 minutes, the UWEC men stood toe-to-toe with the defending national champions, but unfortunately a college game is 40 minutes. Eau Claire led the game at the break, but the Warhawks used a 12-0 run to sink the Blugolds. The loss drops the team one game out of the conference tournament with five games to go.
"We have a sense of urgency, our back are against the wall. I'll use those two cliches," says head coach Matt Siverling. "We need to win basketball games. We'll take it one game at a time. It's been a goal from the get go and until we are mathematically out of it, we're going to continue to fight until we get a chance to get in it."
The team hosts UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday.
The Blugolds women also struggled to tame the Warhawks on Saturday, falling 57-43. It's the team's fourth-straight loss to Whitewater and it's third-straight loss in the WIAC.
"We have some road games ahead and that's something that we really have to capitalize on. A lot of teams in the league are playing well at home this year, so we need to come in and be giant killers, as you would say, to knock them off their pedestals at home," says senior Leah Rempert.
The team begins that task Wednesday against the Titans.
