Winter weather good for free skiing at Tower Ridge

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The winter weather mix kept many people indoors Sunday, but those daring enough to brave the elements had a chance to enjoy free skiing. Eau Claire County offered the day-long event as a means of showcasing its park and encouraging people to get to know how to use it.

"It's really nice that they have events like this because you know so many kids stay indoors during the winter, It's great for them to come on out here, get fresh air," said Sunny Custer of Eau Claire, who had her son along with her.

Free skiing was the name of the game Sunday. People across the Chippewa Valley were invited to try it out for a day as part of Tower Ridge Ski Area's Open House and Free Ski Day.

"Mom and dad like to ski, and grandma and granpda got him his new skis for Christmas, so you know it's really important for us to get our son outdoors in the winter instead of staying indoors all the time," Custer said.

For those who don't ski very often, free skiing is a good way to give it a try.

"I'm not sure people really realize what a gift we have out here, with out trail system with Tower Ridge. I think it's a way to come let the community see what we've got. Especially if you're new to skiing, you can be mentored and taught by experienced skiers," said Karen Myhre of the Eau Claire Ski Striders.

Of course, it all depends on the weather.

"We've had some of the best snow around, a lot of places have really had little snow for this point of the year and Eau Claire has had some of the best skiing. We've had people from Minnesota, from Iowa, coming to Tower Ridge and to our trail system to use them because they just don't have the snow," Myhre said.

Sunday's wintry mix didn't dampen the spirits of those who made it out to the trails.

"We hope that if you're a skier, you're used to braving all sorts of elements and that you can get out here and enjoy a free day of skiing," said Myhre.

Yet---there's still room for improvement as long as the powder keeps falling.

"We'd love more snow. We could always take more snow," Myhre said.

The free ski day is offered a couple of times each season at Tower Ridge. It's normally $6 for a day pass. Volunteers groom the trails and the lessons are taught by the local ski group Eau Claire Ski Striders.
