Doctor tells court murder plot suspect not competent

MADISON (WKOW) -- A doctor told a Dane County court a man accused of buying an assault rifle and plotting to kill a friend and neighbor is not competent to stand trial.

The opinion of Dr. Craig Schoenecker on the mental health of 20-year old Andrew Meis will be considered by a judge. Meis faces two felony counts of attempted first degree intentional homicide.

Court documents state Meis purchased an AK-47 assault rifle last month. Earlier this month, Meis was admitted to a psychiatric hospitalization, and told a staff member he intended to kill at least two people. One of those people, Meis' friend Max Dukerschein, told 27 News he received a text message from Meis with the death threat. Authorities say the hospital staff member alerted police to Meis' intentions. Meis was arrested following his hospitalization.
